Frequently asked questions
What is a psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with specialist training in mental health. Psychiatrists are experts in diagnosing and treating mental illness, with a deep understanding of the relationship between physical and mental health and how they influence each other. They help people understand and manage their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and may be particularly helpful in cases of emotional distress, anxiety, changes in thinking, unusual behaviours, or sleep difficulties. Psychiatrists often work collaboratively with general practitioners and other allied health professionals to provide coordinated care.

What is Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist?
A child and adolescent psychiatrist is a doctor who specialises in caring for the mental health and emotional well-being of children and teenagers, from infancy through age 18. The main area of expertise is focusing on individual factors such as developmental needs, family relationships, and connection with the community including school, psychosocial and culture background. Child and adolescent psychiatrist considers how emotional, behavioural, developmental, and family factors interact.
What conditions do child psychiatrists treat?
Child and adolescent psychiatrists provide comprehensive assessment and management for a wide range of mental health conditions, including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder and related concerns, anxiety disorders (such as generalised anxiety, social anxiety, and panic disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, developmental trauma, school refusal, sleep disturbances, behavioural challenges, and other psychiatric disorders.
In my private practice setting, I do not manage acute presentations, such as suicidality, self-harm, acute psychosis, mania, acute eating disorders or conduct/antisocial behaviour. I also do not provide treatment for addiction, prescription for psychedelic therapies or CBD oil or assessment for gender-affirming treatment, as these are outside my area of clinical expertise. Patients seeking assessment or treatment in these areas are encouraged to obtain a referral to another psychiatrist or specialist clinician with relevant expertise.
What age children do you see?
Dr. Kedis works with young people from birth up to 18 years old. With extensive experience and a special interest in neurodevelopmental assessments and therapies for children, Dr. Kedis focuses especially on those between the ages of 0–5 and 5–12.
What is the cost of a psychiatric assessment?
There is an out-of-pocket cost varies depending on the consultation time.
Medicare rebates apply to consultations with a consultant psychiatrist if there is a current GP referral but the rebates do not cover the entire cost of the consultation. As such, out-of-pocket expenses will be incurred for each visit.
The practice has online facilities to submit your claim to Medicare on your behalf. Once Medicare has processed the claim, the rebate will be deposited electronically into your bank account.
What is the cost of assessment for ASD and ADHD?
Assessment for ASD and ADHD involves multiple components, including interviews with the child or adolescent and their parents or guardians, liaison with the school, completion of questionnaires.
The process typically includes an initial appointment (45 - 60 minutes), followed by 2–3 further sessions, and a final feedback appointment to discuss the assessment outcome and treatment recommendations.
If a detailed written report is requested, this will incur an additional fee, as it requires approximately 1.5 hours to complete and is not eligible for a Medicare rebate.
When and how do I pay the appointment fee?
Full payment is required at the end of each consultation via credit card payment or EFTPOS or PayID.
What is the Medicare Safety Net and how does it help me?
The Extended Medicare Safety Net supports individuals and families with high out-of-pocket medical costs, such as those with chronic or complex conditions. Once a set annual threshold of out-of-pocket expenses is reached, Medicare increases the rebate and pays 80% of the gap fee for the remainder of the year, in addition to the standard Medicare rebate.
Medicare automatically tracks cumulative out-of-pocket expenses and applies the higher benefit once the threshold is met. Families are encouraged to register as a safety net family so that all members’ expenses are combined under a single threshold.
What is the policy for scripts requests outside the scheduled appointment?
Patients/Families are expected to discuss any scripts during their scheduled appointment. Requests made outside of appointments require additional time.
Scripts requested outside of appointments: $50
At the doctor’s discretion, a phone consultation may be required to discuss the request.
Patients not reviewed within the past 3–6 months will require an appointment for any requests, including prescriptions or letters or reports

You must be an Australian resident with a valid Medicare card to access telepsychiatry services
Does Dr Kedis offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. Telehealth appointments are available with Dr Kedis; however, this must be discussed and agreed upon prior to the appointment.
As physical examination cannot be performed via telehealth, you are advised to arrange a physical health check with your referring GP before and during any treatment provided through telehealth consultations.
How to prepare your child for a telehealth psychiatry appointment?
Before the appointment, test your device and internet connection, ensure you have a quiet and private space, and email any relevant reports or previous assessments ahead of time. It is also helpful to explain the appointment to your child in simple, and age-appropriate language.
During the appointment, parents are usually involved, particularly for younger children, while adolescents may be offered some time alone with the psychiatrist.
What if I have previously been diagnosed with ADHD or ASD?
Any medical opinion provided by a doctor or psychiatrist must be based on their own clinical assessment and findings. Dr Kedis will first conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your mental and physical health to reach a diagnostic conclusion, assess presenting symptoms, and determine the suitability and safety of any treatment. Any relevant past clinical records provided will be taken into consideration as part of this assessment.
Can I be assessed for an ADHD diagnosis and treatment if I am using cannabis or other recreational drugs or receiving a prescription for CBD/THC by a doctor?
Active substance use (including cannabis or other illicit substances) is a clinically important factor that may delay or modify ADHD diagnostic assessment and the initiation of stimulant treatment, due to considerations of safety, diagnostic clarity and the risk of serious adverse mental and physical effects even in individuals without prior risk factors.
In such circumstances, referral to an addiction medicine specialist or an appropriate support service may be beneficial to support assessment and management of substance use prior to psychiatric assessment with Dr Kedis. It is recommended that this be discussed with your GP, who can assist in identifying and facilitating access to suitable local services.
Does Dr Kedis provide letter for school and NDIS?
We provide comprehensive psychiatric letter for a range of purposes, including support letter for school and NDIS access. These letter include detailed assessment findings, diagnoses, and recommendations for support.
A separate fee applies for the preparation of letters, which varies depending on the nature of the letter and the time required for its completion.
